Tea trees are planted in lines in coordination with the contours of the land, generally on slopes. The two uppermost leaves and a tip bud, which have the most favored flavor and aroma, are skilfully plucked, commonly with the help of women.
Sri Lanka is one of the few countries where every tea leaf is picked by hand rather than using machinery, if machinery has been used, a wide variety of coarse leaves and twigs will be combined, which will make the richness of the tea to be poor.
